Eid al-Adha, or the "Festival of Sacrifice", is celebrated by Muslims around the world to mark the occasion when Allah appeared to Abraham in a dream and asked him to sacrifice his son, to demonstrate his devotion to the Almighty. Ignoring the advice of the Devil, who tried to tempt Abraham into disobeying God, Abraham pressed ahead with the sacrifice and then Allah stopped him and gave him a lamb to kill instead. Today, the story is commemorated on Eid where sacrifices of sheep and sometimes a goat are performed. The day is a public holiday in Muslim countries and is a joyous occasion for all. So,
when is Eid al-Adha happening? This year, the celebration begins on Wednesday evening, 28 June, and ends Thursday evening, 29 June.
