Technician & Maintenance Specialist – Personalisation Department

Job purpose and reporting structure

Under the direction of the Operations Manager/Department Supervisor, the Maintenance Technician repairs and maintains machinery, equipment, department and installs new equipment and machinery, in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

As technician and maintenance specialist, you will be required to:

  • Install, repair, rebuild, and maintain machinery and mechanical equipment used in production and related services, to maximize production time and minimize down time
  • Explore methods for the improvement of machine operation
  • Upgrade machinery and equipment to improve production
  • Diagnose machine malfunctions and operating difficulties
  • Make repairs or adjustments to keep equipment in production
  • Overhaul and rebuild troublesome components and attachments (this involves dismantling, inspecting, machining and replacing purchased parts)
  • Perform various activities relative to the installation and relocation of existing machines and equipment - this involves dismantling, erecting, levelling, fitting and aligning operations
  • Perform maintenance within the Personalisation Department and other departments if the need arises
  • Assist in determining the nature and scope of forthcoming projects, and the requirements for completion
  • Complete assigned projects as directed
  • Perform all assigned preventive maintenance on production equipment and machinery
  • Schedule machine services accordingly
  • Ensure that maintenance record books are signed off daily with test prints as proof
  • Order parts and supplies as needed
  • Maintain technical competency and remain current with technology and changes in the industry - this includes timeously upgrading software and resolving network problems
  • Complete and maintain all required paperwork, records, documents, etc
  • Comply with all safety and work rules and regulations
  • Maintain departmental housekeeping standards in each section of the Personalisation Department.

Protective clothing/equipment required:

You will be required to use hearing protection, eye protection, safety shoes, and a welding helmet, as dictated by the work being performed.

Education and experience:

An associate degree in mechanical maintenance, or trades training equivalent to a complete, accredited apprenticeship and three to five years of related experience are required.

Language skills:

The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals in English is required. You should also be able to write routine reports and correspondence, and to speak effectively before employees of the Department.

Mathematical skills:

The ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, etc is required.

Reasoning ability:

The ability to solve practical problems and deal with concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists is required. You will be required to interpret a variety of instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Other skills and abilities:

As technician and maintenance specialist, you will also need the ability to operate a wide variety of small hand and power tools, precision measuring devices, electronic testing equipment, and the ability to operate shop equipment.

You will also be required to be on-call as needed.

Certificates, licenses, registrations:

A valid driver’s license and own vehicle are required.

Embroidery Machine Operator – Personalisation Department

Summary: This position is responsible for operating an industrial-sized embroidery machine.

Duties and responsibilities:

As embroidery machine operator, you will be required to:

  • Embroider the front, side and rear of clothing items, including headwear
    • Each side of each item is unique and requires attention to detail to assure quality standards are met.
  • Operate a single-head electronic automatic embroidery machine.
    • Duties also include minor maintenance, oiling and frequent cleaning of the machine;
    • Threading a needle;
    • Understanding thread and bobbin tensions;
    • Recognizing good quality embroidery;
    • Walking the embroidery machine while it’s operating to check for potential problems before they happen;
    • Hooping is one of the most important aspects of the job. Each item should be hooped in a decent time frame.
  • Understand how to program and load machine.
    • This requires reading work order forms to determine which colours to program.
    • You will also be required to program the machine and set embroidery location to its proper spot.
    • Loading machine requires minor bending and changing out finished embroidered items.
  • Understand thread colours and embroider many different materials such as fleece, cotton etc
    • You will be required to thread colours, which involves the ability to visually differentiate between thread colours and styles
    • Attention to detail is a must.
  • Multitask to assure machine runs with minimal downtime.
    • This includes preparing for future orders, minutes or hours before being run
    • You will also be required to place proper colours tied on the machine before a job is ready to run.
  • Communicate any questions to your supervisor.

Technical Trainer – Personalisation Department

Job Description:

As the technical trainer, you will be responsible for training and assisting employees in the development of their skills within the Personalisation Department. Most of the time, you will be working on the production floor, coaching and assisting employees in their printing techniques and knowledge, focusing more on those having trouble with maintaining their work pace.

You will also develop tracking documents to best identify those who need additional training, and conduct a needs assessment that determines what types of training should be provided to staff. This includes identifying gaps between the skills of individual employees and what they need to be able to perform.


The technical trainer is required to:

  • Work with the production supervisors and group leaders to assess training needs for new and existing production department employees
  • Identify internal and external training programs to address competency gaps
  • Organize, develop or source training programs to meet specific training needs
  • Develop training aids such as manuals and handbooks
  • Map out training plans for individual employees
  • Facilitate learning through a variety of delivery methods including classroom instruction and on-the-job coaching
  • Develop and apply assessment tools to measure training effectiveness
  • Track and report on training outcomes
  • Maintain employee training records
  • Train production employees on how to use their tools/printing machinery, as well as how to maintain their work stations so that they are always in good condition
  • Survey the production line to observe inappropriate machine usage or techniques that could prevent an employee from producing a good quality branded item
  • Correct and retrain employees exhibiting behaviour that is contrary to training
  • Document and identify trends involving employees, tools, or tasks that have the most difficulty maintaining a lean and efficient work station
  • Schedule training time with employees who need additional training.

    • The ability to train and communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form
    • The ability to evaluate employee performance/techniques within the Personalisation Department
    • Must be an effective teacher/trainer exhibiting patience and dedication
    • Must be able to deal with stressful situations calmly and exhibit good judgement
    • Must have good time management skills
    • Preferably bilingual.
