It’s nearly that time of the year again, where couples swoon over each other and love songs fill the air. Yes, Valentine’s Day is nearly here and although it may be quite the dreaded day for the singletons out there, it is a day of luurve and romance for those with significant others in their lives.
So, how did this lovey dovey day even come about and what is the actual meaning of Valentines Day? Well, as said above, Valentine s Day is all about celebrating the ones you love, adore and simply couldn’t live without. It was not always a romantic holiday, before the 14th Century when courtly love and Chaucer became popular it was a day of commemoration about the priest who went against Roman Law and helped Soldiers marry and ministering to Christians. He was punished by being imprisoned and subsequently sentenced to death.
How odd that a story so tragic with such a horrible ending should come to represent a day that is so filled with candy hearts, rose tinted champagne flutes and other amazing Valentines day gifts. But not so odd that a story where love is the main character and its trusty companion (St Valentine) and love ultimately prevails. That is the true spirit of Valentines Day. Well that and the beautiful bouquet of red roses, the chocolate covered strawberries, the sweet scent of Valentine's Day perfume ,the fancy restaurant where you want to be wined and dined, the bountiful bag of Valentines gifts that is only shamed by Christmas and finally fogging up the windows at the end of the evening.

However, if you are alone on Valentines Day rather don’t spend it watching Colin Firth in frilly shirts and tights – this will only make you feel badly about your lonely spinster state. Rather treat it like any other day of the week and carry on with your daily routine. You are less likely to make your way through a two gallon tub of ice-cream and chocolate sauce.
