The name Amanzimtoti literally translates to Sweet Water, legend has it that while leading a raid on the Pondo’s Shaka Zulu and his warriors stopped to quench their thirst along the banks of a river, upon drinking the water the warrior king remarked Kanti amanzi mtoti; which is isiZulu for, the water tastes sweet. The exclamation stuck and the river was named sweet waters. The area was officially colonised in the 1820’s and 30’s; initially there were only 11 families that lived in the area but very soon after that hotels and tourist attractions began to spring up. The first hotel was built in 1902 which was the start of the tourist and population influx that followed. Amanzimtoti is one of the most beautiful parts of Kwazulu Natal; with lush vistas of rolling hills and gorgeous coast line.
